Certified Peer Specialist Overview

A peer support specialist is one who assists clients in setting and pursuing their recovery goals, monitoring and quantifying their progress, lending assistance with treatment, and leading by example when it comes to coping strategies that have been helpful in their own recovery.

Basic Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age
  • Must be certified as a Certified Peer Specialist in Pennsylvania,
  • Must possess a provide a Valid driver's license and 3 year clear driving record (MVR)
  • Must be able to complete and pass MVR, criminal background, child abuse, FBI, drug test and physical

Skill(s): Understanding of mental health recovery principles and goal planning, ability to follow instructions and document task completion

Experience: Minimum 1-3 years recent related work experience in mental health field

Essential Duties

  • Reports to Peer Support Supervisor. Is a member of the Behavioral Health department.

  • Coach consumers of the Peer Support program in following the action steps on their personal goal plan

  • Provide peer support, such as through community outings, home visits or phone calls

  • Provide support in learning self help and wellness skills, such as how to use public transportation, advocating for oneself, cooking, scheduling appointments, applying for a job and more

  • Share personal Recovery experience to assist others in their mental health recovery

  • Facilitate, or co-facilitate, recovery oriented support groups

  • Participate on the Peer Support advisory committee

  • Obtain continuing education to maintain active certification as Peer Specialist

  • Provide accurate and timely documentation of services to ensure compliance in service provision with all applicable Medical Assistance regulations

  • Work well with, and collaborate with, the behavioral health department and each consumer's Person Centered Planning support team

Other Duties

  • Assist the supervisor with various administrative tasks to support department operations as directed; may also be assigned special projects.
  • Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.
  • Meet on-going training requirements
